Well, If it makes you feel any better, I love the 8 valve SAABs. I think the engine is a better engine w/ better reliability. We have been driving 99 and 900 8 valve cars for more than 25 years now, and prefer it to the 16v any day. I think it will out run(mileage) a 16v in most cases...all the highest mileage SAABs we have had were 8v. For starters, there are less electronic parts to fail, and we feel the build quality is a bit better in those year cars. I too like the way the engine responds better(esp the B block), and have also noticed the transmissions seem to hold up better in those cars...a bit less torque = a car that runs longer?? IDK, maybe it's just me.
I really would not covert anything on your 99. Even though it is a B block, and a bit harder to fix sometimes, it is a great engine, just ask around. The K jet parts are there, sometimes you just have to look a bit. I have always been able to find what I needed, and stock is usually better for the value of the car.
