You can detect wear by feeling the cup of the inner driver with your finger. the pieces that the tripod bearing rides on can wear out and you will feel a big divot usually in the middle of the section where the bearing sets in the cup. You can't swap these from side to side because of the speedo cable mount on the D/S...you'll wan't to Keep that :). (see, I did a smiley!)
Anyway, just run your finger along those surfaces, if they aren't smooth, you'll want to change them. If they are worn, you'll know when you accellerate hard...the car will vibrate quite hard.
