Trying to get a stable idle Posted by Reed R [Email] (#1557) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Reed R) on Mon, 30 Oct 2023 18:31:34 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
1974 99 LE (automatic, D-Jet)
Trying to get this car to not stall at idle at stop lights and not run so rich (fouled plugs and gas in oil). All the D-Jet troubleshooting is quite clear about making sure that the car is mechanically running perfectly before adjusting the injection side of things. So, I'm working through dialing in all of the specs to the best of my ability.
However, there's a couple of things that I think are fine, but not 100% sure and was hoping to get some expert input.
1. Should the crankcase ventilation system create a vacuum? I'm sure I've seen other posts on this board indicating that removing the oil cap creates a vacuum leak, but I'm thinking that may be a K-Jet thing. With the engine at idle, I removed the oil cap and got lots of pressure coming out (then replaced the cap). I pulled off the hose from the camshaft cover that goes to the "T nipple" and hooked my cheapy vacuum pump to it and it registered no vacuum. I'd kindof expect this since the other side of the "T nipple" is connected directly to the air filter, so creating a vacuum seems unlikely. However, I did spray the nipple orifice with carb cleaner and made sure it was unrestricted before checking.
2. Are low resistance spark plug wires a problem? The service manual says that cables to cylinders 1 & 2 should be 15000 ohm +/- 20% and the cables to cylinders 3 & 4 should be 10000 ohm +/- 20%. I have the NGK 54392 spark plug wire kit installed, which is pretty much the only kit indicated for a 1974 Saab 99. Measuring those wires, all of the cylinders are right around 900 ohm resistance, which is far outside the -20% range indicated in the manual. It doesn't seem like low resistance would be a problem, but I am far from an expert.
I'll probably have a bunch more questions after this, but that's where I am right now. The car is drivable for the 15 mi round trip to the dog park (I've banned the dog from the Viggen), but would love to be able to pull up to a stop light without having to worry about stalling.
