So thanks to replies to an earlier posting, and some subsequent digging, I've come to see that gasoline smells in older Saabs are extremely common. For those of us with sensitive sniffers, that's little comfort, though. On my 1978 Saab 99GL, the problem is a real bummer. So I'm taking the following steps:
1) Have ordered a replacement fuel tank cap, as the original has a small crack. This alone could cause the gas smell, I've learned, but in my case I'm doubtful it's the whole answer.
2) The fuel inlet hose from the back right fender shows wet where it meets the fuel tank, so I'm researching precisely what parts need to be replaced. Thoughts? My mechanic Walter Wong says it's not simply that the clamps are loose.
3) I'm exploring whether the fuel tank vent hose (wherever that is) is disconnected or has a leak.
4) I'm looking into whether the charcoal cartridge is full or needs some adjustment.
Of course, all this is greek to me, but from what I've gathered these are the likeliest culprits.
