You might have a problem with the panhard rod. This is the piece that locates the rear axle laterally. Coil springs are unable to do this in teh way leaf springs are, so an additional link is necessary. In your case, it goes from the top of the axle on the right to the underside of the chassis on the left.
If it is bent, the axle will be off center, and may cause the tire to rub. Look for polished areas where the rubbing has occurred.
Another check is to push repeatedly sideways on the body, right above the rear wheel, to get the body jiggling sideways. If you hear clunking, you've probably got a bad bushing (not too likely) or the bolt is loose on the upper end of the link (more likely). Don't know why, but it always seemed to be the upper end. If you hear the clunking, try tightening the upper end. If it goes away, that may or may not solve your rubbing problem, but at least you'll have fixed the clunking.
