It sounds like you may have broken off the two "fingers" that engage the torque converter to the front oil pump in the autobox. Those are a definite weak link in the older trannies. If that is the case you will have to pull the engine/transmission, remove the front transmission half and replace the torque converter. It may be possible to do this in the car, but probably no easier than complete engine removal. Torque converters are cheap. I've seen rebuilt ones on ebay for $50. The job really shouldn't be that hard, just be sure to have a good shop manual.
BTW, you may want to check the primary drive chain and sprockets. If you broke the chain or stripped a sprocket that could be an easy fix.
