hmm...tough question at 3am. For the viggen blue 73 I had $1000 in materials...$600 just for the paint and clear.....the black 75 was only aout $400 for paint and materials(no clearcoat), but it had extensive bodywork..ie. cutting, welding, pounding, lots of mud work, and lots of primering and blocking.
Prep work is where it costs the most amount of money.....as in 3 months of bodywork. Black only took three hours max to paint, but I had three months of work to even get it to that point. I had 15+ hours after it was painted to sand the finish to get it smoother, then it was buffed to a shine.
How much are you willing to do on your own? Removing glass, seals, lights, bumpers...etc. makes the job so much cleaner. You will not find a hint of overspray on any part of my cars as everything was removed. Not to mention the 2 days I spent masking each one to prevent the over spray.
It's been 12 years since I had a shop....high end paint jobs could cost $3-4k now a days. If you did all the work yourself and just had a shop spray it, it could only be a few hundred dollars. Like I mentioned...I spent 3 months prepping the cars.....and paid a friend of mine $200 to spend a few hours painting it.
What irritates me is when people ask "Did you paint it yourself?" I'm like No, but I did all the hard work! Most people don't understand what it takes to make a car right.
I check this board at least three times a day. Any more questions just ask.
