I was in a similar situation (sort of - trying to tow a 96 with a VW GLI) and was told by several rental places that they would absolutely not rent me the equipment to do that. I wound up renting a 26 ft truck and putting the 96 inside. Finding a loading ramp that I could use was a little challenge, easier at midnight in a blizzard (long story). Don't tell them you are going to put a car in the truck - they don't like that idea. Long distance rental truck prices change day to day and depend on where they need trucks and have an excess. My Flagstaff, AZ to SLC UT truck was $99 (cheaper than a trailer) but the other direction woudl have been $900.
