Carbureted 99 running problems

I cross-posted this from Turbo! and VSAAB...
Ok, so I have the right front side of my '73 99 back together. I removed the driveshaft/hub assembly so that I could drill out the remnants of broken caliper bolt. Now it has a new rotor, pads/hardware, parking brake shoes, and balljoints on that side. Still gotta do the left. Anyway, I decided to take it on a short test drive around the block last night just to make sure that everything was ok. I pulled the choke out and the car started fine but quickly started to idle rough as if only firing on two cylinders. Then it died in the middle of the street and I had to push it back home. This morning I started it up and the same thing happened again. I removed the plugs and noticed that the plug from cyl. #1 was covered in black soot and the other three were soaked in gas. Hmmm. I cleaned them up and fired it back up and the same thing happened - ran great for a minute or so and then ran rough and died. Pulled the plugs again, same thing - three were soaked in gas. I'm totally baffled. This car has run great since I got it a month ago, though I have only put 100 miles on it, it always starts up. However, I do suspect that it has been running rich as a little black smoke comes out of the tailpipe. It is equipped with a single Stromberg CD 275 carburetor. I have no experience with this type of carb. I'm afraid that I may have messed something up when I was tinkering around in the engine compartment and thoughtlessly unscrewed the damper cap, pulled it up, and put it back in. Could this have made something go out of whack? Again, I know nothing about these carbs, my carburetor experience is limited to the FoMoCo carb on my 95 V4. Any ideas or advice would be most appreciated. TIA!

- I meant Stromberg CD 175, not 275 - n/m, Jonathan Dennis, Thu, 22 May 2003 20:11:52
