paint removal tips?

I have a '76 99 that was really poorly repainted a number of years ago with really bad paint. I'm ready to have the thing repainted right but the present surface is REALLY cracked...cracks everywhere. Talking with my paint guy showed me that the only way I will afford a decent paint job now is to remove as much of the old paint by myself. Any great chemicals out there that will speed up the job? I've tried some hardward store paint remover that didn't do so well. I know I can simply get at it with an angle grinder but there has got to be an easier way. Anyone out there have some suggestions?
