that if you don't have brake petal, but you can pump it up and get some petal back, you probably have fluid escaping around the seals in the master cylinder. I had this happen in my 76 BMW last year. The car sat for a while and the seals went bad. If you do the easy stuff as described by the excellent advice by the others, you might want to check the master.
I also joined the New England Saab club, whom publish quite a bit of info on all of this kind of do-it-yourself stuff. This is another excellent way of getting help as a new owner. I am also a fairly new owner with similar types of problems.
The people on this board are excellent.
