Brian,
I like going. The last two years have been bad from a weather point of view (cold and damp). We usually get about 125 to 150 Saabs. Last year there was only about 4 to 5 cars representing the 95/96 class. I believe there where also 2 sonetts, a lot of classic 900's, and of course the newer stuff which doesn't interest me that much (I'm usually interested in the stuff that I won't find in your average mall parking lot on any given day)
We need more double digit Saabs!
All in all, if you like cars, there are probably 1500 to 2000 imports of all makes on the showfield. I really haven't seen part vendors for Saabs - mostly the British stuff. I do find tools, services etc. that I like to shop around for - generic stuff.
It really depends on how far you have to travel. I live in Pittsburgh, so I travel about 150 miles. Saturday is the main day to attend. Sometimes I take my BMW, sometimes the Saab. I'm not sure this year which car I will be taking. When the weather cooperates, its a nice weekend.
As far as parts go - outside of the national convention, and ebay, I don't find many parts outlets for used stuff. Just not enough of these things around. I would recommend the Vintage Saab Club of North America (VSCNA) - formerly the New England Sonett Club, for parts, technical information and help with your car. They are worth more than all the swap meets for info and needs.
Best,
Randy
PS The Pittsburgh Vintage Grand Prix in July is a really cool event with vintage racing, a weeks worth of shows, and some of the coolest cars on the planet. Around 2500 rare and vintage cars on the showfield with racing going on in the background. We get very few Saabs but lots of attention. This show is a major event, and has been going strong for 20 years. I never miss this one. For more info on this, just type Pittsburgh Vintage Grand Prix into your search engine. (lots of photos)
