The general (unofficial) school of thought at the time these cars were manufactured was that you drove the car at varing speeds and loads during about the first 500 miles and you did not run at a single, sustained speed for very long or exceed 50 mph or so during this time. At the end of 500 miles, you would change the oil and filter (the "break-in oil") and then it was about as ready to go as it would ever be.
I would guess most modern oils exceed anything made at the time the engines were manufactured as long as you use the correct weight and service classifications. The SCNA "NINES" magazine has devoted countless pages to discussions of oils over the last year or two so if you really want to know every minute detail of oil performance look at some of the back issues. I understand their concern for today's very close tolerance engines but the V4s are 30+ years old.
My 96s have always run Castrol 10w-30 and my 99s Castrol 20w-50 with no problems at all associated with lubricated parts.
