No i haven't experienced what you describe, i make it a rule to fix my cars before they rust through to the point of anything letting go. Maybe american weather conditions are vastly different from swedish, but at least around here the spring tower rusts, starting at the point where the tower welds to the wheel well and working its way from there, WAY before the engine floor or any part of the wheel well is damaged.

And.. my God! $6000 for a 1967 V4??? Where i'm at a running one starts at $500 or so. And we STILL fix them up if the spring towers are rusted through... To even think of doing a complete body transplant because of rust in just one area is WAY beyond me...
