one more vote for thin oil Posted by CMyles [Email] (#1126) [Profile/Gallery] (more from CMyles) on Wed, 7 Dec 2005 00:47:03 In Reply to: Re: thanks for the responses, Pete Kelly, Thu, 1 Dec 2005 09:26:24 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Pete, I used to get 70w oil from motorcycle shops for these gearboxes. You may know that they used needle bearings to support the gears and are fed through bores in the shafts. Thick oil won't do the job. The later boxes went to steel sleeves on one of the shafts and that gave us the idea of replacing all of the needles with bearing bronze bushings which we would make. I never trusted any pinion nut that didn't have red locktight on it regardless of the locking feature. Like the guy said a loose p. nut is the most common discovery when you disassemble one of these. Those seals are a very unusual size and you probably won't find them except through a V4 parts guy. If you want to replace the bearing shims in your rear cover here's a trick that I used a lot. Cut little pieces of tin solder and lay them on the bearing rims, bolt the cover on then remove it. Measure the thickness of the solder and install shims that thickness. Keep in mind that each of the three bearings will have a different shim thickness requirement. You may have to stick the solder on with vaseline or something and it takes a little practice. Don't forget to account for the gasket thickness. Those V4's were some of the funnest cars I ever had.
