I just returned to Ontario the other night, from an extended holiday trip to Nova Scotia. Given the distance (2000 miles round trip) and time of year, I obviously wanted a warm and comfortable ride, but also a very reliable car that could handle ice and deep snow if need be. So which car did I take? A 96 V4 of course! Comfortable cruising at 75 mph and no need to worry about failing DI casettes, electronic throttle bodies, or Walbro fuel pumps like all the new Saabs ;-) The only preparation was an oil and filter change and a new set of points. It ran like a bullet the whole way and averaged around 31 mpg, in part due to freewheeling down the long hills. Also, this is a 79 96 GL Super with the 1.5L high compression engine and two-barrel Solex carb, which improves the mileage (and hp). 67 - 70 US market model 95/96 has the same 1.5L high compression engine, but with a single barrel carb.
