Hi Gary, for the time being I am switched back to points, and have not had inclination to do the research to find an alternative electronic setup. Avenues to pursue: Mallory, MSD, your local speed/performance supplier. I think (not having actually checked) that older Volvos such as 140, 240, and maybe 720 series used a very similar or identical distributor body, I think the number is JFUR4, from which some adaptation might be devised to use the Volvo triggering system. The approach here would be to get a signal out of the distributor (trigger), this could then trigger either a Volvo ignition module ($$$ for a new one) or any other such as the old 4-wire Chrysler module that is about 6" square and an inch thick and very cheap and very durable. Basically all modules do the same thing unless they contain circuitry to control spark timing, most don't. There is a book by Dr Jacobs that your speed shop should have that explains how to do this, Optimize Your Ignition by Christopher A Jacobs.
I suspect that the problem with the Pertronix is that it is too small and cannot dissipate the heat it inevitably develops. It is a clever setup that works fine as long as it works.
