Hi Bob,
I had my Sonett trans rebuilt a year ago by Jack Lawrence. Fantastic work. Door-to-door was a week. I shipped it UPS. Take off the bell housing, obviously draining the gear oil first. I used a stout cardboard box lined with foam insulation board. Then I put the trans in a plastic garbage bag. Then lots of foam peanuts around it. It survived the trip out and back no problem. The shipping cost was not much- $20 or $30 dollars. I've discussed my positive experience with Jack on this forum several times...you can't go wrong with him.
This past Christmas holiday, I tore down nine (yes, nine) 4 speed VSaab transmissions. Almost ALL of them had loose shaft nuts. Two of them had the nuts WELDED to the shafts!! (if you can believe it!) This is one of the things that kills these transmissions! Jack has better locking devices and procedures to prevent this from happening again.
Finally, take a look at Jim Williams site mentioned in a previous post- he shows the Jack Lawrence method of properly torqueing the shaft nuts with great pictures. I'm forgetting if the link was included- google Sonett Saga and you'll find it. You'll see some great pictures of what the guts look like if you haven't opened up a Saab transmission before.
Best,
Eric in Vermont
