Two projects today Posted by eric in vermont [Email] (#2058) [Profile/Gallery] (more from eric in vermont) on Sat, 21 Feb 2009 13:30:58 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
After a couple of months of no time out in the barn to work on VSaabs, I went this afternoon, got a good fire going in the stove and pulled in the 96. I did two little projects.
1. Air filter. I had switched over to a Weber 34ICH from the old Ford carb last fall. Did the same on one of my Sonetts. I had done some research and found a nice oval K&N air filter p/n RA-0700 that would fit the low clearance on the Sonett. Since I don't drive that car in the winter, I put that air filter on the 96. In the meantime, I obtained a round K&N filter (thanks Paul Z!!) that is too tall for the Sonett, but just right for the 96. P/N RC-2440. The latter doesn't come plumbed for the hose that goes over to the valve cover. A trip to hardware store for a 1/2" 90 degree fitting ($1.39) and a quick drill up through the bottom of the air cleaner and it was ready to go on. No problems. These K&N guys have a nice SOUND to them. What do I mean? Under full throttle, you can hear a really nice rumble from under the hood. I like it!
2. Alternator. Last fall, another VSaab friend had a couple of 900 alternators kicking around and gave them to me. One was missing the regulator and the other was noisy. So I swapped over the regulator to the quiet one. Also- if you use a 900 alternator, you must swap over the fan from your 96 one, as they are supposed to turn in different directions- you want the 96 one. Did that, bolted it on, hooked it up- no problems. Had to use a longer bolt with a 3/4" spacer on the head side. This one is a Bosch alternator rated for 80A,twice the rating of the stock 35A one. So all the talk is true- it's a basic bolt-on upgrade!
