Could be that if it has been sitting for a while in the cold that it has accumulated condensation on the top of the gears and they have started to rust. Regarding the idea of rebuilding these gear boxes... There are a LOT of pieces in there with many surprises that will creep up and bite you... My recommendation is to leave the rebuild to a pro, and there are only about three left. Jack in Jamestown NY is the MAN as far as I am concerned.
