I would definately use the taller geared Sonnet box, the RPM drop wil not be substantial but say at 65 MPH the RPM would drop 3-400 RPM. Your carburetion mods and such will afford the change quite readily. I often start out in second gear in the standard final drive model 96 gearbox. You may indeed need parts from both boxes to sucessfully rebuild one, but seriously, go through the Sonnet gear box first. One never knows what is found until disassembly occurs. and then head to nines for spares internally especially if Tim says it was a good used gearbox. Duhhh, whats this worn part in my hand? If the non replaceable parts (gears and R&P) are OK then get bearings and syncros as needed or availiable. Bench this unit after reassemly by renting big electric drill from tool rental hook 3/4 inch hole saw to coolant hose and secure with hose clamps. and spin box and shift. Clutchless ( declutching) will not be possible AND is not going to hurt the rebuilt box for testing befor install. (just no reverse selection PLEASE, when drill is spinning)Save the original box for backup.
