Does it run at all? If so you should use a timing light. Valves out of adjustment can contribute to backfiring. I would check valve clearance first. Adjustment is done with the engine at operating temperature, but doing it cold will get you close enough to run decently, then repeat when fully warmed up, this means temp gauge up to normal operating level (usually right in the middle) and having driven 5-10 miles.
