Clocking it against another car is not a very accurate way of testing it. New cars are not necessarily spot on. I remember years ago that one of the car magazines (R&T or C&D) found that the indicated speed on most OEM VDO-built speedometers in many European cars was about 10% high. It was worst in Porsches and BMWs. I'm not sure if the speedometer on a Sonett is any different than the one on a sedan. I would expect the output at the cable off the transmission to be the same, even though the internal ratios are different. I don't have my 96 manual handy to look up the ratios.
