Hi Jamie, if you are talking "restoration" to something like original, the 99 is a can of worms. Saabs B motor has a water pump which is horribly expensive and a pain to install, the heater control mechanism is hard plastic junk, the 4 speed box with gear primary is crap, (the chain drive primary was a vast improvment.) and if is a 74 or earlier with the D-Jetronic injection, parts are getting scarcer than well.
With the 96, you have a simpler, sturdier, lighter car with an engine that is still possible to get every part for and if you can read simple english from the Haynes manual, do every repair except gearbox rebuilds.
Need new fenders on a 99? visit the body shop. On a 96? Get out you big screwdriver. 12 or 13 screws and you're done.
On the road, which do you think would be more fun: a 2500 lb car with
maybe 110hp, 3.7 turns lock to lock steering and 3.9:1 gearing OR a
1950 lb car, with say 125hp, 2.7 or 2.2 turns in the steering and 4.88:1
final drive. Oh, yeah... for thousands less to build.
P.S. My first Saab was a 69 99 back in 1978. My first 96 was in 1980; I saw the error in my way and it's been 96's since then. The only car which has lured me away is my Ford Sierra Cosworth 4x4, but that's another story.
