I have owned a bunch of 900's and when I saw a 99t go up for sale near my house I snached it right up. It is a blast to drive, and I don't really think the turbo model is any less reliable then the N/A models. The worst part about 99's is that they have this terribly designed water pump. If it fails it is a huge pain to deal with.
One reason to get a 99 is that some of the parts are compatible with your 900. That makes it easier to deal with, if you are famalier with 900s.
My buddy has a 96. It is really cool and I would like one for myself someday. What a neat car.
