Had something very similar, if it might help here's what I did :-

Take off air filter.
Remove servo pipe at servo end and plug with a bolt.
Remove vacuum advance pipe from distributor and plug with whatever you can find!!
Remove pipe from intermediate plate valve to rocker box.
Place thumb over the valve thingy and get someone to start the car. You might need to increase the idle speed if there was air getting past the valve in the first place.

Try it now!!

If this still doesn't work try isolating these...

Disconnect the non return valve on the servo pipe i.e. so there is just a length of pipe connected to the intermediate plate, plug it and try again.

Disconnect the pipe completely from the intermediate plate and place a finger over the air intake. Might hurt a little after a while!!

After this you're probably down to trying another intermediate plate. It has been known for these to crack around the valve thingy as there's not much meat around there.

But don't worry, you're not on your own. I've been through the same thing and have the same setup as you - it drove me potty. If you look on these pages I've posted countless queries on brake servos/carbs/overheating possibly due to weak mixture. All due to air getting in SOMEWHERE!!! In fact, when you isolate it please let me know if your engine returns to idle more or less immediately - mine returns to 950 fine then after a few seconds drops to 750 ( other readers welcome!! ). I've got 3 of these V4's and it's just this blasted green one that gives me SOOOOO much grief I'm forever swapping parts with the other 2!!

Oh, and if it's the carb with the ball joint linkage instead of the plate with a hole I'll gladly give you a couple of tips on a really good linkage which opens the carb fully.

Good luck!
