I recently got my hi-po V4 (F4 cam grind, balanced, ported, 2" downpipe and y-converter MSS exhaust, etc.) started and I've been driving it around doing tests, etc. I've noticed that the mixture is fine on the flat and for regualr driving, but if i go up a big hill or load it too hard, it sputters and coughs. I have a newly rebuilt distributor, so it's not a spark problem I don't think. Timing is correct, and if I play with the mixture it doesn't seem to do much except change how the car idles (rough or smoothe). The idle adjustment is set to about 1000 rpm... everything should be perfect, but I'm now thinking I should raise my main jets by a step or two because of my free flowing exhaust. Does anyone know if ther is a common standard jet number inside these carbs from the store? What should I use? does anyone have an engine like this and have a jet size suggestion? I plan to get a rebuild kit and order the jet before I start taking the carb apart because I want it to be drivable as much as possible. Is this a smart thing, or should i just pull out the jet and see what it looks like? How can I tell what the Jet is anyway?
