96 oil pressure question Posted by paul [Email] (#792) [Profile/Gallery] (more from paul) on Mon, 1 Apr 2002 14:21:47 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
I have been following Melanie's saga with interest. My 73 96 has a hot oil pressure (new aftermarket gauge)ranging from about 30 psi under load down to about 8 at idle (causes the warning light to flicker). The car otherwise runs great and sounds, well, no worse than any other 96. No idea how many miles it has. The oil pres light has been flickering for several thousand miles, getting slowly but progressively worse. I need to pull the engine anyway because the oil pan gasket is leaking pretty badly. My question: what are the causes of low oil pressure besides a bad oil pump, clogged intake to the pump, and worn main bearings? Is there any way to diagnose the culprit by differences in warm/cold behavior or high viscosity/low viscosity oil pressure readings? I'm not very excited about tearing the engine down but certainly this is the time to do it if I have to.
thanks
