another ball joint/steering knuckle question

Are there any problems or warnings I should know about when removing the steering knuckle? Specifically, I am wondering about being able to refit the knuckle after I have removed it - will the spring force the upper A-arm down to a point where I will have difficulty putting the knuckle back in? Is it necessary to compress the spring or block the A-arm from moving down when I remove the knuckle, or is this not usually a problem?
Also, I am wondering if I can separate the ball joints after I remove the knuckle by disconnecting the ball joint from the A-arm? Or is this a bad idea? (Obviously I would still have to separate the one on the tie rod.)
thanks,
Rowan
