Here's the story.
The car built in 11/73 was the donor car for the motor, transmission, axles, outer CV joint, hubs, wheel bearings, and knuckles. The only part used from the one built in 3/73 was the backing plate.
Both cars had/have drum type e-brakes and ATE calipers.
The tranny from the 74 has a serial #555873. I'm thinking the second number designated the year as my 74 service manual mentions a serial number starting with 545. Since I bought the car when it was 12 years old, it is possible that a 75 tranny was put into it as they still had the external slave cylinder. 75 was also the year that the gearboxes and drives(I think) were changed as well as the brakes. They were fitted with girlings on all four wheel.
The drivers from the 74 are beefier that the 73's as well as the differential housing so swapping parts from one tranny to the other will not work.
I pulled both axles from the car and matched them up with the the other ones. They are identical in length. The right side is 2 3/4" longer than the left, so mixing them up is not possible.
After double and triple checking everything, the only thing found to be different is the width of the tranny by 1" at the drivers. Considering the picture in the original post, the one looks to be 1/2" taller than the other. I have not matched the driver side driver, but I bet it is also 1/2" taller. The tripods bottoming out is what seems to be the problem. The engine does not move side to side when only one axle is in. It shakes side to side when both are in.
Why the set-up worked in the 74 body and won't work in the 73 body is beyond me. At least I have the other tranny to dump in and see if the problem goes away. I degreased it last night and today I will pull the covers and have a look inside. I hope it's good, because I only drove the car onto the trailer in West Virginia, and off the trailer and up the drive at home.
