I don't think the 99 would slide under an SUV any easier than a 900. The hoods are pretty much the same height. Both cars are pretty good in that respect.
99's are pretty safe cars, but to meet new (at the time) safety standards, the nose had to be lengthened (thus was born the 900). The longer nose of the 900 provides more crush space for frontal impacts. All 99's since 1972 have side impact door beams and 5 mph bumpers (both are Saab inventions). Also, the front seats are designed to slide back along the rails in a severe rear impact and an energy absorbing steering column.
Pop the hood and look at the aft part of the wheel well, and you'll see the A-pillar welded to it. Pretty stout piece of metal. The A-, B-, and C-pillars form a type of built-in roll cage. The did a test where they hung a 99 upside down 2 meters above a concrete floor and dropped it. The headliner came loose, but that's about it (even the windshield stayed put).
If you can find them, replace the seat belts (and let me know where you got them!). How often they were used is irrelevant; UV exposure deteriorates the strength over time. For this reason, they are stronger than they need to be, so they're most likely still ok, but it'd be a good idea to replace them anyway.
