Hi Bill.
Pretty much everything the other guys are saying is correct. The 99 was an exceptionally safe car when it was first designed in the '60s and its level of safety compared to a contemporary small car, say a Daewoo Lanos, Daihatsu Charade etc is still higher [airbag no good if dash is already in your face!] and compared to say a Escort, it'll bend less, but obviuosly there are no airbags. The padding around the inside is all designed to soften the blow if you hit it with your head - like the 900 - those pillar pads are pretty thick. Rollover would be the same as a 900, but frontal impact <slightly> worse: as already stated the 900 is better, but you'd have to compare stories from two similar accidents to decide if you thought you were more at risk and it would worry you. I've driven 99s since 1983 and had one major serious accident [black ice & oil, a heady mix...] and I believe myself and my wife escaped serious injury due to our 99. Tested that roof padding... Interestingly another small french car had the same experience in roughly he same place the next day [same surface, no-one cleaned it up] and he wasn't so lucky. I kept the mangled number plate off his car as a sobering reminder...
If you want ultimate safety and you're worried, best to buy the newest car you can and never ride in anyone elses...
