The b-motor has both a water pump and distributor mounted to the block, driven from the crankshaft via jackshafts. The water pump is prone to failure, leakage, is a b!tch to replace and is getting more difficult to find parts for. The distributor driveshaft can be bent and the gears stripped, but is generally trouble-free.
The h-motor has a conventional belt-driven water pump and a distributor mounted to the head, driven by the cam. Simpler, more reliable design. Quiter, too. Early h motors had a single belt for the water pump and alternator, later cars had a dual-belt design. The B201 (h motor, SOHC) evolved into the modern B202/B234/etc. 16v DOHC designs in use today.
In terms of performance, they are about the same. Most critical dimensions are identical or very similar. You can swap most parts between them freely. All things considered, the h-motor is probably the better choice due to better availability of parts and overall reliability.
