Car runs fine, then...

... the car starts to loose power and dies. Orange charge light comes on (it actually comes on faintly and flickers since I bought the car last month). I let the car sit a little start and go - drive a few miles, and same thing. Any ideas?
Put in electronic ignition, new Weber, new fuel filter, complete tune-up, hoses lines, plugs etc.
Can a bad alternator cause a car to not generate enough electrical power to stay running?
