I have installed 2 electric water pumps in my 99's and they work fine, but I would recommend repairing your factory pump if the mechanical parts (idler shaft and pump shaft)are undamaged. I don't know why your bearings failed, but it's probably worth buying a pump repair kit (bearing and seals)and trying it again.
The cost of a repair kit is about $40. The Davies-Craig electric water pump (http://www.daviescraig.com.au/) costs about $250. The controller (which is not necessary) is another $150.
Installing the electric pump actually requires more labor than replacing the original pump. The old pump must be removed and the shaft holes plugged up, and then you have to modify some hoses. After all that, the car's heater will not function well. It takes a long time to warm up because of the change to the coolant flow pattern.
The electric pump seems very reliable and circulates the coolant adequately, but I would say that it is worth doing only if the idler shaft is damaged, necessitating removal of the engine, and/or if the pump shaft is damaged and you simply can't find a good one, new or used.
A plus for the electric pump is that you get a slight power increase at high RPM because the engine is not having to turn the mechanical pump.
Good luck, whatever you decide!
