In a nutshell:
The 1709cc slant 4 was being developed for Triumph by British engine builder, Ricardo. At the time, Saab were after an engine for the forthcoming 99, did a deal, and the Ricardo engine ended up being used by both Triumph and Saab, in 1709 and 1854cc formats. Saab were using these units unmodified (identical to units fitted to contemporary Triumphs). However Saab soon developed the engine into a 2 litre variant (the B20) while addressing many of the weaknesses of the original design (slanted headbolts, not enough meat between the bores etc..). From the earliest B20 through B201, B202, B204, B234 right up to the current B205 and B235 engines used in the 9-3 / 9-5 these engines are all derived from that original Ricardo lump, although they have shared no common components for nearly 30 years.
Hope this helps
