Excellent! Saab on! :)
The pinging under high load is "normal" but not desireable. That is what happens as the turbo pushes more air into the engine, but the fuel leans out proportionally. This will damage the engine. There is a pressure switch which is set to cut off turbo boost before pinging starts. Some people remove it and wire the cold start injector to add fuel at higher boost pressures, or you can add water injection, or both. In '82(?), Saab introduced APC to control pinging. Search some of the old messages on the Performance BB. I've gotten some great tips on how to increase boost. Haven't quite gotten to that point myself though...
My 99GLi/Turbo is about finished. I'm trying to track down an electrical short that keeps draining the battery. Just a couple more details and I'm on the road!
