My Sunshade fix for $0 w/o removing headliner (Long) Posted by Marcd7 [Email] (#1232) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Marcd7) on Fri, 3 Jan 2014 13:25:13 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Well folks, it's not perfect, but it works! After finding out that the teeth on the sunshade motor get out of timing by my local indy, I decided to reset the teeth a bit without removing the headliner.
I posted earlier, that I could get my sunshade to close all but about 2" by popping the moonroof "spoiler" up a bit, then inching the sunshade closed a bit more with the button, inching the "spoiler" up a touch more, inching the sunshade a bit more, etc. But I could never get it to close all the way.
The sunshade motor is right underneath the center dome light, which is held in by two tension strips and pops down into the rear passenger cabin. After unplugging the light assembly, you can see two torx screws holding the motor into the roof of the car. You can also see where the third one is, but cannot be accessed unless you basically bend the center of the headliner, which would dimple it afterwards. So with a small ratchet set, extensions, universal joint, and a torx bit, I was able to unscrew the two visible ones. (It was like a game of Operation, so you must be patient so as to not dimple your headliner).
After unscrewing the two torx bolts, and my sunshade being positioned 2" away from closing (previously mentioned), I pulled lightly down on the sunshade motor (in the area between the two torx screws I removed), which disengaged the teeth to the shade runner just enough, while pushing the shade closed manually with my other hand.
While still unscrewed, I pushed up on the motor to make sure the teeth were engaged, and ran it back and forth a few times. Now it closes all the way, but stops short in the back by about an 1.5".
Happy with that, I screwed the torx back in, and I'm in business.
I say it's not perfect, because after opening the actual moonroof, then closing it, I have to go back to popping the "spoiler" up just a bit, close sunshade, inch up spoiler, close sunshade, etc. to get the sunshade all the way closed again.
Clear as mud? I've never posted photos on here before, but I will take some and try to post later.
I'm sure the motor has limit switches which calibrate as mentioned on page 34 of the owner's manual, but again, I didn't want to get into removing the headliner at this point.
I'll be happy to answer questions to help you out. I'd say you need to be pretty comfortable as a DIYer to do this, or else you risk some cosmetic damage to your headliner.
