Extended drain intervals with synth???

Has anyone seen anything authorative to support the oft-stated belief here that you can safely run synthetic oil longer in an NG?
I know synthetic doesn't shear and break down like polymer-thickened multigrade dino oil, but the main reason for frequent oil changes is sludging, and sludging is very much a function of how long the oil is in the car, and the additive package (the detergents get used up over time). But my understanding is that synthetic oils use similar additive packages.
I would like to switch to a full synthetic in order to gain longer drain intervals along with any other benefits, real or imagined. But I recall when Mobil 1 first came out they orginally sold it mainly on the basis of greatly longer change intervals, then had to back pedal when it was found it didn't really work that way in real life.
