It's been a while since I read up on this, but I'm pretty sure your assessment of "sludging" is over-simplified. Sludging is a form of breakdown, so more stable particles (as in synthetic oils) will not sludge at anywhere near the same rate. Check out the motor oil bible, I found it to be very informative.
