With all due respect REM, I've never ever gotten a CEL using non-NGK plugs in my 97 SET. Resistor cores, yes, we need them. NGK's no! We don't. The system you describe is basically the coil-over-plug system that almost all manufacturers have converted to. None warn to use one brand of plug or else. The only difference was Saab's use of an expensive all-in-one cassette instead of ecoomical easy to replace individual coils.
Saab has a long established relationship with NGK. One that predates use of the DI. It's only natural that they urge us to not use anything else. They don't sell other brands of sparkplug thru saab dealers.
Of course, we must use resistor core spark plugs due to the fact that we have no resistorized plug wires to prevent rf/em from zapping the ECU. Especially with that powerful burn-off cycle.
Is there anything special about NGK and resistor plugs? Nope, every major plug maker has resistor lines of plugs. Even good ol' Bosch Supers can be had w/ resistors.
Yes, I've seen "Dr. Boost's" infamous post. Did he provide any concrete reasons? No, he didn't.
I've used: NGK, Bosch, Champion, and AC Delco plugs in my Saab. As I said, not a problem yet. Original DI, 156,000 miles.
As for platinum, how can a material that has 6 times the electrical resistance as normal plug electrode coatings be "okay to use" while different brands of plug using normal plug coatings aren't? It doesn't make sense.
And of course, if you read the WIS, Saab states that 70-80% of all DI's the get returned to them from dealer shops for being "bad" aren't! Simply misdiagnosed.
I drive my car 150 miles per day. NGKs or not, it's doing fine...
