(biased) Comments based on over 26 years of using and selling AMSOIL synthetics:

Most of the cars in our family over the past 25 years were Saabs or Volvos with about 100K on them when bought. Took them home, flushed with AMSOIL Engine Flush, changed to AMSOIL, and drove on. Never had a leakage problem.

Twenty years ago, if the engine had been improperly serviced and had developed false seals, there was a possibility of finding pre-existing seal/gasket problems. Today's oils are much better, and this is not normally a problem. If there is already a leak, keep in mind that synthetic is not a "mechanic in a can". The leak may lessen, or turn into a flood--but not the oil fault.

I strongly recommend using a good flush before changing a high mileage car to synthetic. AMSOIL found that, after introducing their flush, complaints about excess oil usage dropped by about 75%. The best flushes I know of are made by AMSOIL and BG. If you don't, or won't, flush, then watch for any sudden increase in oil consumption. If you see this, change the filter and top off.

Do you need it? Technically, no. You can get very good results from non-synthetic oil----changed regularly and fairly often. Any name brand synthetic on the market today is capable of going the maximum manufacturer drain interval. The better oils, such as AMSOIL and Mobil 1, can go considerably longer. I've been changing AMSOIL at 1 year intervals (oil filter at 6 months)--and going as long as 30,000 miles a year (non-turbo) and 10K on the turbos.
