When I installed aftermarket speakers in my car, I had discovered that the original SAAB speakers were connected out-of-phase (fronts vs rears). I reversed the connections on the front speakers (compared to SAAB's wiring), and got a significant improvement in sound quality just from that. The feeling of "spaciousness" was gone, and everything became much plainer, but bass became stronger, and stereo effects suddenly came to life. I like it much better this way.
As far as the actual "quality" gain from better speakers, I also discovered that there was practically none (I put in the high-end Pioneer speakers). Having listened to people, I also tried feeding the front speakers directly from the additional amplifer (much more powerful than the built-in one) -- again, not much improvement.
I also brought all speakers home, connected it to a home amplifier (right RMS for all speakers) and again, could barely hear any difference between the cheap 3.5" speakers and the $100 ones. So, if even in an absolutely quiet basement I could not hear any difference, I do not hold much hope for a running car with an engine on.
With the powerful amplifier, though, it becomes quite obvious that only one way to connect the speaker is right. If you switch polarity, it just does not sound right, as some posters noted before. The "not right" business can only be perceived in bass notes. Bass becomes very muddy one way, and is punchy and normal the other way. I could not hear any difference in mids or highs.
If you get obsessed about it, the only way to know for sure if you connected everything right is to buy one of the audiofile test CDs,
and run the tests.
