Since then, the MBC+A has been developed which allows for higher boost settings, eliminated boost droop and presssure overshoots that cause fuel cuts. This is inexpensive and effective.
A MBC/MBC+A makes the turbo spoolup way faster and that alone makes the vehicle much faster and responsive. There is still the turbo lag from a standing start, but this is much less than the controller induced delay. The changes to the intake and exhaust also allow the turbo to react faster. All of these changes are synergistic, IE, 2+2=5.
Doing these mods is a lot of fun and will really make for some serious vehice bonding :)
Some of older Saabers worked and studied these things for years, you can just jump in and not have to tinker for years. We know what works well. But perhaps all of that was the fun part.
At this point I would make the Viggen IC mod more of a must do if you are serous about better performance. It is quite an inexpensive mod as things go.
ball park costs and guesses
MBC+A < $100, don't really know cost! jeff in atl
K&N 33-2663 $55?
Saab Sports exhaust (stainless) $336 - genuinesaab.com and others
old flex pipe tired, new one is $160
3" duct mod $10 - $30 DIY
Viggen IC $385, with three hoses - genuinesaab.com
TBTC rework - DIY
So all of the above should be around $1K. Viggen IC is he only thing on the
list that I would consider optional or deferable. If your exhaust system is rotting out, the cost for the exhaust system stuff can be considered part of maintenance costs that would be spent someday anyways.
Suspenstion mods are more expensive:
but SAS type swaybar is cheap, several sources
you can easily spend $1K to $2K on the front suspension
If you go with a MBC+A, (I really cannot recommend just a MBC anymore), then with the supporing mods, if you then decide to spend the big bucks on an ECU mod, your vehicle is well prepared to support that and the money in an MBC+A is not a major issue. It could be canibalized to make a SMBC as well. A few brave souls have stacked MBC and ECU mods, not for the faint of heart or wallet.
