-Just replaced my '97 900SE T5 stocked with OEM Boge Sachs with a full set of Bilsteins this weekend. When I pulled the RH strut bearing out, it came apart and the ball bearings went everywhere. The LH side was in tack. I replaced the strut mount and bearings on both sides with a Scantech flavor from eeuroparts. The ones they supplied me seemed an 1/8th of an inch thicker than the stock ones. One half was black, and the other half was white. I had ordered these this summer and had waited to install them when I had time. A popping and clunking sound from the front end was present for the past year.. plus my struts were shot. With the bearing being thicker, the lower bronze colored (cup shaped washer) that sits beneath the strut mount is now loose. The ones I pulled out look like the ones pictured below. To answer your question, the Bilsteins front struts had a smaller size (nylon threaded) bolt but was supplied. The rear was also a different size (1mm difference) and also supplied.
The first (front RH) strut took me 3 hours since I had to make 3 trips to the auto parts store to get tools. I wanted to avoid using a pickle fork as it would have destroyed the rubber boots. My wrench (spanner) set only went up to 18mm and the RH Ball Joint Lock Nut on the Control Arm was 19mm. The LH side was 18mm. Coincidentally, I ordered new (Scantech) control arms 2 years ago and had them installed at a shop.. Eeuroparts must have been out of stock so they sent me one SAAB OEM and one Scantech. I also had difficulty popping the tie rod end out. I took a trip to Advanced Auto Parts and found a Pitman Arm Puller that did the trick.
Fortunately the LH strut only took about an hour. Rears were a piece of cake.. Although getting them back in the lower mount took some persuasion.
Well, after bolting the last strut on, I took the car for a spin and purposefully took some hard corners. The Popping sound was still present but intermittent. The sound seemed to be coming from the front springs (popping) But overall, the ride was much smoother, although stiff.
What could be causing the popping?
