Hi Bob. I have a '99 9-3 LPT, and it is a fantastic car.
I will agree with Coolknight. Be warned, I bought the LPT coming from a FIAT Uno (1 litre) and found it to be fast during the test drive. A few months later I was kicking myself for not getting the full-blown turbo.
I did some research, and found that these cars have the exact same engine, except that the LPT has a different management program that keeps boost low. On my car (99MY) there were also some other minor differences, such as the solenoid valve; I believe this is not the case on 00MY onwards.
Anyway, what happens is that the LPT is much cheaper than the aero (205hp), but is essentially the same car. You can get aero power by having the ECU reprogrammed by one of several respectable Saab tuning companies. If for whatever reason you feel uneasy or unsafe doing this, you can simply purchase a 205hp ECU (engine control unit) and replace the LPT one. Either way you get the same (and more if you wish) horses for a fraction of the cost.
This is what I have done.
