I've been thinking about stuff I like and stuff I like even more and I've made the following observation: For basically anything one would want to buy on design/utility/quality grounds, there's always a well-known option and one that becomes apparent only after 'scratching the surface' a bit.
While the former are not only good in their own right, they have instant recognition amongst even the unitiated. More to the point, they enjoy superior marketing and/or distribution efforts.
The latter, while perhaps lacking the broad appeal of their more popular counterparts, have plenty and often more to recommend them. More importantly, they seem to reward their owners by retaining their enjoyability long after the novelty has worn off and the admiring throng has dissapated. They're often better priced, but just a bit harder to remember and harder still to find. I get the impression that Saab owners are more often to seek out the latter than most people.
Take a look at this brief compendium. Any resemblence to a dim recollection of something called 'SAT verbal'exists solely in the mind of the reader.
