For me, the problem was in the BMW 323 (I never tried a C-class). Arm rest in that model demanded double jointed-ness to reach the shift. But the geometry in the Saab is totally different. Perhaps it is the RWD hump in the BMW, perhaps it is the legnth of the stick, but the saab armrest simply does not interfere for me. I keep the seat 90% of the way back.
