Premature battery death?

My '99 9-3S, 20,000 mi. just refused to start this afternoon. Bizarrely, I had just driven it. Also, when I tried to restart, the alarm, lights, stereo, etc. all appeared normal, but the engine would not even start to turn over. Despite my trepidation, it did respond to a jump start and I was soon on my way, but it would not hold the charge at all, even after a reasonable rolling period. Clearly a dead battery.
This seemed strange given the low miles, temperate weather (Houston, TX), and the fact that the car's never sat for an extended period. I talked to my Dad, who has the same year and model as I do with only a few more miles, and he said he had to replace his battery recently as well!
Any other Saaber have his/her original battery die early? I'm surprised at this situation, b/c my last car, a 1990 Nissan 240SX went over 100,000 on its original battery, and 20,000 of those were in Ithaca, NY where it get quite nippy in the winter. Given Saab's winter-tough rep, I was expecting to at least match the Nissan's battery life. Oh well, this trip to the dealer coincides nicely with my scheduled 20,000 mile service, and I was needing to get the vent selector fixed (again).
