what a bunch of energy and hot air spent over this topic. Bottom line is your engine is no different than the one put in the same car manufactured in 99, and 00 and Saab saw no need to put synthetic in those model years. In fact, I had to insist my dealer use Mobil 1 in my '99 Viggen for the 10k change (and paid a good bit extra) He said I was wasting my money. Right or wrong, dino oil with the requisite SJ rating is more than adequate for any modern engine. I use Mobil 1 for peace of mind, because I drive hard, and because I'm not sure I fully trust Saab mechanicals yet. I still change oil at 5k intervals (and change it myself now, after the dealer yanked me for 6 bucks a quart times 5 quarts for a 4 liter fill!)
I have a Volvo 855 that I bought new in 94, changed oil every 5k mi. with Castrol 10/30 and it now has 210,000 trouble free miles and runs like new. Dino oil can't be that bad!
Don't worry about your oil for now and put in a blend or synthetic next time. Many seasoned engine rebuilders claim an engine breaks-in better on dino oil anyway and that you oughtn't bother with synthetic till well after 5000 miles.
